The Bottle Mill Difference

How Do We Do It?

With so many companies repurposing bottles these days, from individual crafters to larger outfits, we feel it’s important to provide our customers the highest quality products at the best prices. While we commend our competitor’s commitment to recycling and think some of their products are really cool, we want you to know how we are different.

Most of our competitors use a process called “cold working.” This involves wet cutting the bottles with a diamond saw and grinding and beveling the edges with wet diamond tools. Finally once the edges are smooth the cut surface is polished with a special polishing compound made for glass, leaving it with a semi- gloss finish.

The Bottle Mill has recently deployed an entirely new system where we use heat to cut and melt the edges of the glass. We then heat the entire piece up to a very high temperature to remove stress from the glass making it suitable to withstand rapid temperature changes without breaking. This gives a superior shine, feel on the lips and truly rounded bevel to our glassware. It is also far less prone to chipping, as “cold worked” glass has a tendency to chip very easily.

Currently most of our glassware is heat finished. Due to limitations with some bottles not all of our glassware can be heat finished... yet. In the coming weeks we will be indicating on each product page what type of finish each product has. If you have any questions on which finish your product will have, just ask us. Currently 95% of our drinkware is hot worked.
